What’s behind the growing success of Melina Cortes-Nmili’s brand Lalla Bee? Since her debut in 2015, the Dominican designer has been creating custom dresses that have ended up at New York and Boston fashion weeks, Styleweek Northeast, and a fashion show series at the Courtyard Tea Room & Map Room at the Boston Public Library. Nmili believes that clothes strongly influence our mood — to her feeling physically and aesthetically comfortable is essential. She uses silk and printed jacquards mostly from Italy to create dresses that are both long and short, form-fitting with a pop of color.
When it comes to career paths, most people decide to settle down and follow a traditional business road, others just settle. Melina Nmili refused to settle for anything less than passion, excitement and following her true calling. For her, this calling comes in the form of her fashion brand: Lalla Bee.
“My brand stands for the belief that no matter what your past is, or what circumstances you have had to overcome – you are strong, you are graceful, and you are a queen.” Hearing Melina Nmili talk, I couldn’t help but sit up straighter. Her character reminded me of her past, vibrant, warm and despite challenges, having headed towards progress.
Fashion designer and self-made women Melina Nmili is as enticing as her fashion collection. Lalla Bee’s structured silhouettes, colorful palettes, and painstaking attention to detail reflect the values and struggles of her past. Rather than following the latest trends in fashion, Melina’s designs are intentionally timeless. She believes that every strong and beautiful woman should own a luxurious, classic, yet contemporary piece that never goes out of style.
It is truly inspiring to meet those that overcome odds and strive to empower others. BELLArecently caught up with the fashion designer to discuss her road to success, the core belief behind her brand and what true beauty means to her.

Cortes-Nmili is a style force to watch and one of six women designers to be feted on the Sept. 30 opening night of Boston Fashion Week. She’ll be showing a versatile collection of dresses emphasizing classic, flattering silhouettes and adaptable colors for easy transition from day to night.

Es una manera de expresarnos y de comunicarnos y creo que definitivamente podemos utilizar este medio de comunicación para llevar un mensaje positivo cualquiera que este sea”, así se expresa la diseñadora dominicana radicada en Boston, Melina Nmili, quien desde pequeña se apasionó por la moda.
Nmili ve la moda diferente a los demás, piensa que la creatividad que se expresa a través de ésta es una forma pura de expresión y puede ser nuestro escape a tantos problemas y negatividad que vive el mundo.“La moda es más que un vestido y un desfile, puede ser un movimiento, y si ayudamos una persona, si influimos positivamente en la vida de una persona, ya eso es un cambio positivo en el mundo”, destaca la propietaria de la marca Lalla bee.La diseñadora, cuyos diseños se basan en una atemporal, clásico, limpio, sin muchas “guindalezas”, pero llamativos por sus detalles sutiles y su terminación, recientemente presentó su quinta colección “Primavera 2018” en el New York Fashion Week, en el marco de Fashion Designers of Latin America.
En cuanto a la creación de las piezas, manifiesta que se inspira “siempre en estilos clásicos, en las mujeres fuertes, una mujer que a pesar del trabajo y la lucha siempre se ha sabido llevar con elegancia y gracia, mujeres con cuerpos “reales” y
en los estilos que sobresalten esa fuerza y belleza interna más que todo”.“Para mí, poder crear algo y ofrecerlo a un público es mi manera de comunicar quién soy, cómo me siento, de dónde vengo al igual que mi evolución como mujer y ser humano. Es como una manera de hablar sin tener que decir palabras, es cómo me comunico”, finaliza diciendo Melina Nmili, quien en octubre participará en el Boston Fashion Week por primera vez.
